“Do I really need to go?” I asked my brother Mark with nervousness in my eyes. He nodded his head for the umpteenth time and sighed. The following day would be the day of the anticipated soccer competition. I had practiced hard for the day to come. I even played in the rain on some occasions, not wanting to miss any training day. Nervousness filled my brain as I shuddered at the thought of disappointing anyone.
The day of the match arrived. The spectators roared in excitement. I was face-to-face with the opposing team. I could tell by their faces that they were also determined to win. The supportive crowd of spectators were divided and either cheered for my team or the opposing team captain, Bill’s team.
We started the matchmaking passes with ease but as time went on, we started to play vigorously as our opponents were catching up. During halftime, the score was at 2-2. Minutes from the end time, I was desperate. My ears were suddenly on mute. Everything went silent. I then lifted my leg and with all the force I could muster, I kicked the ball with all my might. Silence filled the air as the stadium of spectators held their breath.
“It’s a score!” my teammate shouted. I stood frozen in my spot, not able to move. I finally came to my senses as my teammates piled onto me. I then started to punch the air victoriously knowing that all my hard work has paid off. We were victorious! Victory tastes so sweet after shedding so much blood sweat and tears.
