Part 62 – English Comprehension (Level 6)

The following is an English Comprehension test. The difficulty level for the test is equivalent to that of Level 6 (or Primary 6) students. Read the passage below and answer the questions.

Passage begins

“How much are those puppies?” a little boy asked the owner of a pet store.

The store owner replied, “$30”.

“I have $2. Could I please take a look at them?” the little boy asked.

The store owner smiled at the boy and then, he whistled. Out of their kennels from the back of their store came five balls of fur. They were so tiny. One puppy was limping far behind the other four and tripping as it made its way down the aisle.

Immediately the little boy asked, “What’s wrong with that little dog?”

The store owner explained that it was born with one limping leg. It would always limp and was not able to walk or run like the other dogs.

“That is the puppy I want to buy,” the little boy exclaimed.

The store owner said, “If you really want it, I will give it to you.”

The little boy got upset. He looked straight into the store owner’s eyes and said, “I don’t want you to give it to me. That little dog is worth every bit as much as the other dogs. In fact, I will give you $2 now, and 50 cents a month until I have paid the full price for it.”

The store owner’s eyes widened when the little boy limped towards him. The little boy then looked up at the store owner and softly said, “I don’t run or walk so well myself, and the little puppy will need someone who understands.”
