Spicy Chickpeas

This is a Punjabi dish that is popular all over India. It is generally eaten with Paratha (fried Indian bread), Puri, Chapatti or white rice. Serve this with raw salad. This is a spicy dish and can be served as breakfast or dinner.

  • 2 cups of chickpeas
  • 3-4 tomatoes
  • 1 big onion
  • 2-3 red or green chilies
  • 1 inch ginger
  • 3-4 cloves of garlic
  • Coriander leaves
  • Salt
  • 1 tablespoon turmeric, chili, cumin and coriander powder
  • 2 tablespoon of vegetable or canola oil.
  • 1 tablespoon of ghee (optional)
  • 1 bay leaf (optional)
  1. Soak the chickpeas overnight in water.
  2. Rinse the soaked chickpeas and wash them.
  3. Chop the onion.
  4. Blend ginger, garlic, chili and tomatoes.
  5. Put a pressure cooker over the gas.
  6. Put two table spoon of oil in a pressure cooker once the cooker is heated.
  7. Once the oil is hot add onions and the bay leaf (optional) item.
  8. Add the blended mixture and fry for about two to three minutes
  9. Add the chickpeas.
  10. Add salt to taste. Add the turmeric, chili, cumin and coriander powder and mix well
  11. After about 5 minutes of cooking add two cups of water.
  12. Close the lid of the pressure cooker and bring it to boil.
  13. Wait for 4 to 5 whistles of the pressure cooker.
  14. Let the steam pressure settle then open the pressure cooker.
  15. Add the coriander leaves.
  16. Serve hot with chapati, paratha, puri or with white rice. Add some raw salad with lime as a side dish.
